While many people may think that a professional surveillance system is for businesses only, this is simply not true.  You can find a professional surveillance system for your home as well.  However, securing you home with such a system is not a simple as it may sound, as there are many factors that should be considered and researched. 

Before you begin your research for a professional surveillance system for your homes security, you should consider the following questions so that you will have an idea of what type of security measures you would like for your home:

• How much will your budget allow you to spend on a surveillance system?
• What parts of your home do you want under surveillance? Just the front door, the entire perimeter of your home, your garage, the inside of your home? Also, how many cameras will you need?
• Do you want the professional surveillance system for your home to detect hazards inside your home, such as smoke and carbon monoxide, and have an alarm system?
• How long do you want the professional surveillance system to record? Do you only want it on at night and when you are away from your home, or do you want the surveillance system on all the time?
• Do you want the surveillance system to have night vision?
• Do you want motion sensors and a control panel?
• Do you want a monitored system, meaning when an alarm is signaled the police or the monitoring station will be contacted?

The next step in finding a professional surveillance system for your home is researching what is available to you in your price range.  Basically, if you want a full out professional surveillance system that protects against fire, burglary, carbon monoxide, etc… you will have to pay for it.  Moreover, if you purchase a professionally monitored system, there are likely to be monthly fees. On the other hand, if you only want a simple home surveillance system, you can purchase types that hold a specified number of phone numbers, so that when the alarm is triggered it will automatically call one of those numbers and play a recorded message.  This type of system is more budget friendly and is simpler to install. Probably the most budget friendly type of professional surveillance system for homes is the ones that are not monitored and you can install yourself.  These are better used to alert you at night if someone tried to break into your home.

Another aspect that is important to consider are the types of cameras your professional surveillance system will have.  You have three basic categories of surveillance or security cameras to choose from with any type of surveillance system and these three types are as follows:

• Wireless cameras that send signals or transmissions to some type of receiver, such as a TV or VCR.
• Wired and wireless cameras that send recorded images to your computers so that you can access the images anywhere.
• Wired cameras that either work with your TV and VCR or have their own monitor and recording system.

Besides what type of cameras you want, there are other aspects of the camera that need to be considered.  For instance, you should consider how wide of a space will be under surveillance, so you can decide the zoom and panning you will need, which refers to how wide the camera sweeps and how far out it will record.  Moreover, you need to consider if you need black and white, color, and night vision on the cameras in your professional surveillance system. If you do not need night vision, but would like the cameras to see in low lighting, you need to consider an aspect known as the LUX. This is what allows the camera to see in bad lighting and the lower the LUX, the better you camera will do this. 

The placement of your home surveillance system is one of the most important factors to consider, as bad placement will not allow your system to be effective. The following tips will show you where to place your surveillance cameras in order to make your professional surveillance system effective:

• If you are securing the outside of your home, it is best to put surveillance cameras that will either focus on or have in its panning range all points of entry to your home, if you are on a budget, try to get the doors and large windows in the cameras range.
• It is wise to have surveillance cameras for your back yard, as it is more likely intruders will come from here as they are not as easily seen.
• Sometimes, placing cameras on the corners of your home will allow you to sweep the entire perimeter of your homes property and keep an eye on all areas of your yard.
