Teenage drug use is a problem that goes back at least as far as the 70s, but many people are growing more concerned about it nowadays. Some people argue that teenagers use drugs as a way of experimenting and finding out what is right for them.

They view teenage drug use as just another part of the search for self-discovery. Sometimes, however, teenage drug use has a darker side.

You see, teenage substance use can quickly turn to teenage drug abuse if left unchecked. Everyone knows that teenagers do not have the best judgment, and so when they experiment with drugs they can often make terrible decisions. Some of the risks involved with drug use include automobile accidents, police busts, and of course drug addiction and overdose.

A lot of parents read up on teen drug abuse looking for signs of addiction, but often this approach only breeds paranoia. The best approach in parenting teenager for drug use and abuse is to be honest and open with your teen and to expect them to be honest and open with you. Don't try to catch them.

People don't like being watched. It makes them more secretive than ever before. Instead, make it clear what risks are involved in using drugs and that you are there for them if they ever need to talk. Also making clear that they won't get in trouble for talking to you.

The good news is that most teenagers does not lead to teenage drug addiction. The statistics say that a majority of people experiment with some form of drug use in their teenage years or early 20s. The vast majority of these folks turn out okay.

Nonetheless, there are risks. If you catch a teenager using drugs, it might be a good sign that it has gone too far. After all, if they are using drugs so often that they can't even hide their use from you, they probably are abusing them.

Fortunately, there are many adolescent drug rehab centers available. Some of them take a very militaristic approach, but others are more based on psychology and modern principles of medicine.

I prefer the latter, but some people like the idea of instilling military-like discipline in their teenagers. To each his own I guess. The important thing is that you get the kids help when they need it.
